Seeing Red
Isn’t this a beautiful garden? It will certainly attract the attention of your friends and neighbors.
However if you are hoping to help pollinators like bees it will fall flat.
Bees will not give this garden a second glance.
Why?
Bees cannot see red so a predominance of red-flowered plants will look unappetizing.
You don’t need to forgo red plants altogether, after all they often attract hummingbirds which are another great pollinator. Just make sure to have a healthy dose of yellows and purples. Also rather than a “gumdrop” garden of onesies here and there, plant blocks of flowers in areas of at least 3 feet. This gives a greater concentration of color and nectar/pollen and is more appetizing for the bees.
