I Have a New Baby
Lest you think that miracles do happen I will say right away it’s not the human kind. My baby is a new car. Actually, it’s a new van. Actually it’s a new, used van.
My old Honda Pilot was bulletproof and I got over 194K miles on her. You may have seen pictures of that car jam packed with plant material.
I used to open the trunk at the nursery and I would see the employees shake their heads as if I would never get all my purchases in. And yet I always did. There was a lot of creative maneuvering but if I did not have plants on my lap there was still room.
But the Honda needed new tires and I was faced with a dilemma.
- Did I get new tires and then try to get through the winter?
- What if the car died right before I needed to head to a speaking engagement?
In the end, I decided that The Captured Garden needed new wheels.
And so the hunt began. I asked everyone I knew (and sometimes complete strangers) about their vans. I had already decided against a truck. Sure they have lots of room but plant material can get wind burned; a van could hold the load while at the same time protect it. I loved my Honda and was leaning towards the Odyssey but the seats do not store in the floor like the Dodge Grand Caravan. If you have seen pictures of my garage you know I do NOT need anything else to store in it!
Ultimately it was the silver Dodge Grand Caravan that won my heart.
It might not be the sleekest ride but I know it will be a hard worker. Got a great price at an honest dealership (shout out to South Easton Motor Sales ) and my baby is now sleeping comfortably in the garage.
As a gardener I know it won’t be long before there are tools in the back, dried leaves in the cup holders and muddy fingerprints on the door handle. But for now the seats are clean and the inside does not smell like compost.
All that’s left to do is name my new chariot.
Should I go with Fern? Daisy? Holly? Maybe Peat?
